With no universal standard, what is considered medical-grade?
There is no universal definition for medical-grade refrigeration, however, there are specifications that high quality medical-grade refrigerators should meet or surpass relating to temperature stability, uniformity, and recovery.
Surprisingly, many healthcare facilities have yet to make the transition from household or commercial refrigerators to true medical-grade cold storage. Improper equipment may:
- Negatively affect patient safety due improper administration or ineffective testing
- Lead to financial loss due to compromised products which require disposal
- Result in the loss of irreplaceable patient samples which are critical to research
- Create excess work and frustration for healthcare workers who have to deal with equipment problems and long drawn out processes required in the event of a temperature excursion
